Friday Flash 55...

Death was painless.
The slit was performed with surgeon like precision!
As the guts spilled from the rib cage,
Hot steam rose like a fog on the Moor.
Amidst the oozing entrails, the prized liver was extracted.
Still warm...It was sliced, chewed, and deliciously swallowed.
Unlike Hannibal Lector, Andrew Zimmern needs NO fava beans!!!

Retro Wednesday....

In 1947, The Wright & McGill fishing lure company started making split bamboo fly fishing rods.
These are mostly hand-made and are quite expensive. The first 2 pics were taken off of a web site that sells vintage rods. Of course they are in pristine condition, and it has the original tube. It sold for $925.00!!
I have the same rod, and the original tube. The only difference is that this was my Grandpa's
Rod, and he used it until about 1960. He then got a new fly rod, and gave his old one to me. Between the both of us we have caught HUNDREDS of fish with this beautiful fly-rod...
It will NEVER be sold!!!

Tuesday Tid-Bits...

Hi everybody, cold enough for you yet?

We all are getting a big kick about Tina Fey's portrayal of Annie Oakley, but unless you are my age, sit back and let me tell you a story that you may never have heard before...

In 1961, a journeyman comedian and impersonator named Vaughn Meader was kidding around with some of his buddies, and gave a half-way decent mimicry of John F. Kennedy. His buddies thought it was good, so they encouraged him to incorporate it into his act. So Meader put on a five-minute "press conference" at the end of his routine, taking questions from the audience and responding in Kennedy's Boston accent. The JFK schtick got him a mention in Life magazine, which helped him land a contract to record "The First Family", an entire album of his Kennedy parodies.

The "First Family" sold more than 10 million copies, making it for a time the most successful record in history. Meader became a superstar overnight!!! When he played Vegas, he made over $22,000.00 a week...Not bad for a guy that was making $7.50 a night just 6 months earlier.

Then on November 22, 1963...A year after "The First Family" made him the biggest name in comedy, Meader climbed into a taxi cab in Milwaukee. The driver asked him if he had heard about JFK's trip to Dallas. "No, how'd it go"? He replied, thinking that the cabbie was setting up a joke. But this was far from funny-in an instant Meader went from being one of the top comedy acts in the world, to being a pariah. JFK was so much loved and revered that no one could stand to watch him perform. Even after he stopped doing the political stuff, it was too painful to watch his act.

Meader sank into depression for years, he started doing drugs, and he lost all that he ever made . He eventually pulled himself out of the doldrums, took back his given name of Abbott, and regained some moderate success as a Blue-Grass singer in his native state of Maine. He was married 4 different times, but eventually met a lovely girl that was with him his last 16 years until he died in 2004..

Fortunately Tina Fey is multi-talented...

I hope that this little tale brought back some memories for some of you. For others, now you know ...The Rest Of The Story!!!

Peace...!!!

Grrrrrr.....

Yesterday Michigan State University beat U/M to claim the Paul Bunyan trophy. This trophy was created in 1953 by then Governor G. Mennon Williams to go to the winner of the annual contest between the two schools. Since it was created, Michigan has won or retained this trophy 34 times. We Wolverines are very used to seeing it proudly displayed in our trophy case in Ann Arbor. Congratulations to ALL Spartans on this day....Enjoy!
.
.
The oldest Trophy in Division 1-A football though, is the Little Brown Jug.
In 1903, Michigan had beaten Minnesota 28 straight times. Obviously there was no love-fest in Minnesota for Michigan. Michigans Coach, the legendary Fielding Yost, didn't trust the Gophers to provide clean drinking water for the Wolverines, so he had an assistant purchase a 5 gallon water jug in town for 5 cents. Michigan took a 6-0 lead late into the 4th quarter, when Minnesota scored a touchdown to tie the game, the crowd of 20,000 went crazy. They stormed the field, they climbed on everything climbable, and the officials had to call the game before it actually ended. In all the confusion of getting out of town safely, the jug was left behind!!
When the team returned to Ann Arbor, our equipement mgr. contacted their coach and asked that the jug be returned; His response was..."If you want it, come and get it"!!
Well, that 1903 game was so violent and bruising that Michigan did not play Minnesota again till 1909. We did indeed win it back that year, and an Icon was created.
We have to travel to Minnesota this year to play an excellent Golden Gopher team...Our trophy case is in peril of losing yet another fabled item in this "rebuilding" and disappointing year...
Get your licks in now kiddies while we are down...Like the Phoenix, we will rise again from the ashes, and administer retribution....
.
Have a Great Week....Peace!!!

D.O.A...55...............

I remember...We were flying low,
and hit something in the air.
The girl...Is laying there beside me,
and on her face is such a distant stare.
Liquid warmth, is flowing from my body.
Life is oozing out, with my blood.
The attendant kneels down and whispers softly,
"Sorry, there's no chance for you...."

Dog Log's........

It's been eons since I've given a Mr. Knowitall observation, so I think its about time for a little Doggie Blurb...
Now people my age or maybe a little older remember Lassie, and you do indeed still see a few reruns. Of course everyone has seen The Wizard of Oz. But Rin Tin Tin may be a stretch for some of you younger kiddies.
LASSIE..The most successful animal actor EVER, starred in 7 feature films and had a TV series that ran for 19 seasons-2nd on the all time list for a drama behind Gunsmoke.
But there wasn't just 1 Lassie, there were 6 of them, and they were MALE!!
"She" was created by writer Eric Knight in a 1938 Saturday Evening Post short story. And although Lassie went on to make more dough than any animal actor in history, Knight didn't make squat...He sold the rights to MGM in 1941 for $8,000 Bucks!!
.
RIN TIN TIN..Was films first bona fide animal superstar. He made his film debut in 1922, and his box office success over the next few years literally saved Warner Brothers from bankruptcy. During the '20s, he made some 22 movies and was voted the #1 movie star in America!!
Rin Tin Tin was insured for $250,000 Dollars, and lived in a mansion right across the street from Jean Harlow. His sons and grandsons were among the dogs used in later films and the TV series that ran from 1954-1959..And as little Rusty always yelled when he sent Rin Tin Tin into action...Yo Rinty!!!!!!!
.
TOTO..Almost didn't make it into MGM's 1939 film, The Wizard of Oz. Their prop department was using W.W. Denslow's original illustrations as a casting guide, but they couldn't identify the breed of dog in the pics. Sketches were sent all over the world and no one responded... Until Hollywood trainer Carl Spitz happened to see the illustrations. He knew right away that they were looking for his Cairn Terrier named Terry. When Spitz took Terry to the studio, someone grabbed him and shouted.."Thats the dog we want"!!!
.
Jeez, now I'm gonna foot-note myself here....
The original owner of Lassie on TV was a kid named Jeff (played by Tommy Rettig). He also had a chubby friend named Porky. Whenever Porky came over to see Jeff, he would call him outside by screaming.."EEE AWW KEE".
He was replaced by a kid named Timmy (played by Jon Provost). His TV mom above was June Lockhart (later in Lost in Space)..Hot Hot Hot!!!
His last owner was a forest ranger played by actor Robert Bray.
.
ARRRRGH...I can't stop myself!!
W.C. Fields was supposed to play The Wizard of Oz, but he was dropped when he held out for more money. He was replaced by Frank Morgan.
Ray Bolger was supposed to play the Tin Woodsman, and Buddy Ebson (Jed Clampett) was slated to be the Scarecrow, but they traded parts. THEN Ebson's lungs got infected with some metallic dust sprayed on his costume, and he spent the next 6 weeks in an "Iron Lung". He was replaced by Jack Haley...
.
Now Thats TMI Tuesday.....
.
Peace...!!!

A Red Sky at night is a sailor's delight...
A Redneck can indeed be a Red Sox fan!
Loose lips can make you Red faced.

TMI Tuesday........

This day in History...( I got this history theme going on this week ).
William Penn was born on October 14th.
After he became Governor, he changed the name of his colony from
Beaver Lick Crossing to Pennsylvania.
.
Also, Sarah Palin's eyelid goes spastic, and her nervous tic causes much doubt about her ability to cash in on her "15 Minutes" after the election..
.
Tina Fey on the other hand, is elected Governor of Vermont!!
.
Peace...!!!

Columbus Day........

Columbus sailed the ocean blue,

In Fourteen Hundred-Ninety Two

For many days he was at sea,

Discovering land for you and me.

Ya Ho, Ya Ho, Ya Ho my lads Ya Ho....,

I remember singing this song in Miss Thomas's second grade class..

Personally, I have a problem celebrating the life of a Murdering, Kidnapping, Imperialistic, Thieving, Religious Zealot, but thats just me.......

They did name a town in Ohio after him though!!

Have a Great Day.....G

Black and Blue Week-End.....

Hi everybody...Todays menu consisted of Roast Pork, mashed potatoes and gravy, garlic bread, peach cobbler...And since Mandy and Her fiance' are vegetarians, I made Butternut Squash Lasagna. You take some al dente' lasagna noodles, layer it with a squash puree, bechemel sauce, Mozzarella cheese...3 times bake at 375 for 40 minutes...and at the end sprinkle more cheese!
Not bad at all.....
Needless to say I'm not in a GOOD MOOD....Later!!
